Manaslu Delight

TripCode: ACN61
25 Day trip with easy to moderate trek
US$ 2490 /person

Opened only in 1992 for international trekkers, Manaslu is a fascinating area, offering an unparalleled alpine experience. It is considered one of the most challenging treks in Nepal as the trail is rough and steep, often literally hanging onto a bluff high above the river. This is also equally popular as a trek that offers a combination of rich cultural heritage, unsurpassed beauty, and biological diversity. It passes through a huge precipitous valley to the contrasting scenery of Sama, crossing the snow-covered Larkya La (5,213m) via the side of a beautiful green glacial lake. Sacred monasteries combine with views of the Tibetan plateau against the stark white Himalayas. This is a truly spiritual place. After the pass, the trail drops down finally arriving back to Besisahar (832m) where you catch the bus back to Kathmandu.

Trekking

Trekking around Manaslu officially started in 1991. This area was where one of the earliest treks in 1950 was led by H W Tilman, with Jimmy Roberts trekking here to cross the Larkya La. Manasu (8,156m) was finally conquered after several attempts by the Japanese in 1956, when the first ascent was made.
Although the Larkya La is not especially difficult, the trek around Manaslu is one of the most challenging in Nepal. Trekking over ridges and cliffs, there is a lot of ascent and descent. The trail is steep and rough in paces and passes through remote country, well away from the main trekking areas.
Trekking days are normally about 6-9 hours long, though this can vary. You begin trekking after a hearty breakfast, stop for lunch in the middle of the day and arrive to the camp in the afternoon where well-deserved tea or coffee and cookies will be waiting for you. Meals consist of three courses mainly of local dishes, but you will be surprised at the tasty treats our experienced expedition cook will serve up.

Sleeping in a tent, this will be shared by two people, with a warm sleeping bag, inner liner and insulated mattress provided (if you wish extra comfort, you can bring your own blow-up mattress too). For drinking water, boiled water is provided after the meals, so make sure to bring a one or two litre water bottle. A dug-out toilet tent will be set up near the camp.

Why trek to Manaslu?

Trekking to this destination offers the most challenging trek, rewarded by the most fantastic scenery in this little visited area. Spectacular, it is also culturally fascinating. The local people are direct descendants of Tibetan immigrants who settled 500 years ago. The speech, dress, customs are almost exclusively Tibetan. The mountain views and Larkya La are sensational, with the pass being one of the most stunning in the Himalayas. A strenuous trek in a remote area, the effort is rewarded by the sense of being on the top of the world.

Level of grade – Strenuous Adventure

Nepal is a mountainous country that means climbing up and down through many hills, valleys, forests, pastures and ridges, which offers challenge for everyone. This trek is no exception, except that there is maybe a bit more up and down, along precipitous trails that are not for anyone with no head for heights. Days may involve a long duration of walking (6-9 hours) and can be physically demanding with the altitude exceeding 5,000m and crossing high passes. Anyone with positive frame of mind can do this but people are recommended to prepare themselves accordingly.

Food and accommodation

All meals are included on the trip apart from meals in Kathmandu. Our experienced trekking cook and his assistants will be serving you with the best possible blend of local food making sure it’s clean, tasty and hygienically prepared.
Your accommodation is in spacious two-person tents with all the equipment such as a sleeping bag with inner liner and sleeping mat provided.

Best time to come

The recommended time to come is from the March to May, and from October to November, as this is when the weather is dry and generally settled. The autumn can be the best time for trekking, as skies tend to be crystal clear.
