Trekking
Pikey Peak is an area in the lower part of Solukhumbu, a few days from the main Everest trekking trails. Though within sight of Everest and other high peaks, Pikey Peak is little visited and so trekking here still holds much charm, as you are very much trekking off the well-trodden routes. Though not so well-used by trekkers, the trails are good, forming the main paths used by local people travelling between villages and to market. The high point of this trek is 4,065m, at the top of Pikey Peak.
You start and finish your trek at Phaplu, flying to the little airport here. Trekking days are normally about 5-6 hours long, though this can vary. You begin trekking after a hearty breakfast, stop for lunch in the middle of the day and arrive to the camp in the afternoon where well-deserved tea or coffee and cookies will be waiting for you. Meals consist of three courses mainly of local dishes, but you will be surprised at the tasty treats our experienced expedition cook will serve up.
Sleeping in a tent, this will be shared by two people, with a warm sleeping bag, inner liner and insulated mattress provided (if you wish extra comfort, you can bring your own blow-up mattress too). For drinking water, boiled water is provided after the meals, so make sure to bring a one or two litre water bottle. A dug-out toilet tent will be set up near the camp.
Why trek to Pikey Peak?
Especially fascinating for its cultural diversity, this trek goes through an area of beautiful hills and offers fantastic views of much of the central and eastern Himalayas. Though this is quite a remote area where not many people go trekking, it is not difficult to reach. There are many fascinating ethnic communities living here: Sherpas, Rais, Gurungs, Chhetris – all with their own customs and languages.
During the spring, the forests all around this area are blooming with rhododendrons.
Level of grade – Introductory-Moderate Adventure
Nepal is a mountainous country that means climbing up and down through many hills, valleys, forests, pastures and ridges, which offers challenge for everyone. Days may involve a long duration of walking (5-6 hours) though this can vary. At times, it can be quite physically demanding, though most people with a reasonable level of fitness should not find it difficult.
Food and accommodation
All meals are included on the trip apart from meals in Kathmandu. Our experienced trekking cook and his assistants will be serving you with the best possible blend of local food making sure it’s clean, tasty and hygienically prepared.
Your accommodation is in spacious two-person tents with all the equipment such as a sleeping bag with inner liner and sleeping mat provided.
Pikey Peak
Although not a very highest mountain (4,065m) is one of the tallest hills of Solu. From the top, you can see of the central and eastern Himalayan peaks: Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Annapurna, Gauri Shanker, Lhotse, Numbar, Mera Peak, Nuptse and many more. The name Pikey is said to be derived from the name of a Sherpa clan deity. In July, locals celebrate and worship their clan god, the eastern Chyabo Pikey.
The trail passes through small settlements and presents a fascinating glimpse into rural village life.
Best time to come
The recommended time to come is from October to December and March to May, when especially, the rhododendrons are in bloom. July is an especially interesting time to come, when the celebrations are being held to worship the clan god.
