Journey to the Hidden Kingdom of Upper Mustang – 17-Day Expedition | 11 Days of Moderate to Strenuous Trekking

Nestled in the remote northern frontier of Nepal along the Tibetan border, Upper Mustang is one of the Himalayas’ most extraordinary destinations. Often referred to as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” this remarkable region offers a rare glimpse into a landscape, culture, and way of life that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.

At the heart of Upper Mustang lies the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, the historic capital of the former Kingdom of Mustang. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, colorful rock formations, and vast high-desert landscapes, Lo Manthang is a cultural treasure where Tibetan traditions continue to flourish. Although the kingdom was integrated into Nepal, the royal lineage remains deeply respected by local communities.

Historically, Mustang prospered as an important trading hub along the ancient salt route connecting Tibet and Nepal. Today, the trekking trail follows these historic caravan paths, crossing high mountain passes of over 4,000 meters and passing through traditional villages, centuries-old monasteries, and fascinating cultural landmarks. A full day in Lo Manthang allows ample time to explore its monasteries, narrow alleys, and rich heritage.

The adventure begins with a spectacular flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, tracing the course of the sacred Kali Gandaki River—one of the world’s oldest river valleys. As you journey through the region, you’ll be surrounded by a stunning palette of red, ochre, gold, and gray cliffs, framed by distant snow-capped peaks. Scattered across this dramatic landscape are picturesque, whitewashed villages and ancient monasteries, creating unforgettable memories at every turn.

Upper Mustang is best visited during spring and summer (March to September). Unlike many trekking regions in Nepal, the area lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, making it ideal even during the monsoon season. Winters can be harsh, prompting many local residents to move to lower and warmer areas such as Pokhara and Kathmandu.
